Moorhead, MN (April 11, 2011) – Minnesota Twins fans will get a double header of a different kind on April 15 when a special episode of Heartland Poker Tour airs immediately following a live broadcast of the Twins versus the Tampa Bay Rays. The episode titled “Raise Your Hand for Africa” will air on Fox Sports North at approximately 10 PM.
Filmed in Las Vegas in February, the episode covers a celebrity charity poker tournament supporting the Starkey Hearing Foundation and PROS FOR AFRICA, a non-profit relief organization providing basic needs to children of Africa. Based in Minneapolis, the Starkey Hearing Foundation is dedicated to providing hearing instruments to those in need. Both organizations completed a combined African mission last month alongside ten NFL football players.
“Our goal is to raise awareness to help the world’s hearing impaired, and we thank the football and entertainment communities as well as our event partners for staging the February tournament in support of our mission to Africa,” said Bill Austin, Chief Executive Officer of Starkey Laboratories and Founder of the Starkey Hearing Foundation.
HPT producers promise an exciting show when first-time poker player Debbie Gostowski of Illinois finds herself at the final table next to poker legend Phil Hellmuth and Hollywood icon Steve Martin. Viewers will also see “Mini Me” Verne Troyer of Austin Powers fame play against Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno and Hercules Kevin Sorbo. Hellmuth co-hosted the event with Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson and Larry Fitzgerald Jr. of the Arizona Cardinals. Peterson said the event was important to “help provide hope, help and love to the children of Africa.”
The special airing on FOX Sports North allows HPT to reach another 2.5 million homes throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota, bringing additional awareness to the cause. Headquartered in Moorhead, Minnesota, HPT airs weekly to over 100 million US households, in addition to widespread distribution throughout Europe and the Caribbean. Syndicated on hundreds of stations, DirecTV and DISH Network also broadcast the show nationally. Since 2005, HPT has filmed nearly 100 poker tournaments across the country. Tour stops in 2011 include casinos in Colorado, Nevada, Indiana, Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, Iowa and Minnesota. Station information is available at HPTpoker.com.
