Running Aces Press Release on Reopening

Running Aces Sent out a Press Release this afternoon on Reopening, read it here:  Running Aces Re-Opens After State Shutdown

Wed, July 20, 12:30AM Update:  Canterbury Park is saying while it appears the state shutdown is nearing the finish line, the bills being passed tonight are not effective until the day after they are signed by the Governor. They have been notified tonight by the Governor’s office that even if all bills are passed and signed early Wednesday morning, they will not be allowed to re-open until Thursday. They will keep everyone posted as to their specific re-opening plans.

Canterbury Park & Running Aces Preparing to Reopen This Week

The two local card rooms (Canterbury Park & Running Aces) that were forced to close its doors as a result of a Gov’t shutdown are aiming to be back open early this week.  They both have intentions of opening up ASAP after the budget is passed and signed which they are hoping to be Tuesday or Wednesday.  Last Thursday, Governor Dayton and Legislative Leaders announced they had a “framework” for a budget agreement, although it is clear a lot of work remains before a budget deal is produced, approved and signed.

Memo from Running Aces:

We are excited that a budget deal is about to be reached. This is an update on our plan for reopening.

As soon as a deal is reached and the Governor gives us an opening date, we will gear up for opening the doors.  Our horsemen are here and ready to race as soon as we can.  We plan on opening the card room within a few hours of getting word we can open.  The horse racing side of things takes a little longer because of drawing for positions and getting all of the horses to enter the appropriate races.  As of right now it looks like Tuesday could possibly be a day we resume races.

Live WSOP Coverage

ESPN has been covering the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event in a very different way than in previous years.  They’re doing it live!

The broadcast is tape-delayed perhaps half an hour, and although there is a camera for the hole cards, they are not revealed until the completion of the hand.  I, for one, really enjoy this change.  I realize that it may not be as exciting for the casual viewer, as the action is perhaps more difficult to follow.  What it does allow for, however, is terrific color commentary and analysis.  The best move ESPN has ever made came this year when they removed Norman Chad from the booth, and replaced him with a rotating group of prime professionals.  Norman Chad has too elementary an understanding of poker to properly commentate, while players like Esfandiari and Hellmuth offer a deeper, more insightful insider perspective.

I think the broadcast is wonderful, and I can’t stop watching!  I haven’t been interested in the World Series of Poker for many years, and I applaud ESPN’s effort to try a new format.

MSPT = Bigger and Better

The word has been on the street for several months now but we’ll make it official.  The Minnesota State Poker Tour (MSPT) initially founded by Bryan Mileski and Phil Mackey in 2009 has rebranded to the Mid-States Poker Tour (still MSPT).

It only makes sense since the MSPT crossed the border for the first time to Diamond Jo Casino in Iowa this past April.  Nothing will really change except that additional locations will be added in 2012 throughout the Midwest.  The beloved two-day, deep structured Main Event will stay the same.

The extended base of players should also bring much larger prize pools to the MSPT which I know all players will love!!  The MSPT had only been marketed to Minnesota previously and featured a $100K Guaranteed Prize Pool.

The new website – www.msptpoker.com has been up for about a month if you have not yet noticed.  You’ll see there are 9 locations (5 in MN, 3 in IA and 1 in WI) that have already committed to partnering with the MSPT in 2012.  The MSPT has also added Grand Casino Mille Lacs this coming November, 2011.  The two NEW Iowa stops in 2012 are at two of the largest, most popular card rooms in Iowa, Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino and Riverside Casino & Golf Resort.  These are sure to be HUGE events.

The new website (www.msptpoker.com) still has a lot of work to be done on it but will be awesome when complete. It will have player profiles, stats, career leaders in cashes, final tables, total winnings, etc.  Almost identical to the WPT.com site.

The MSPT is very excited for the opportunity to grow further into the Midwest and is very lucky and grateful for the tremendous player base and locations in Minnesota who have supported the MSPT to make it a success!!  We look forward to continuing this partnership for decades to come.

With 10 locations expected in 2012, the MSPT will be Guaranteeing $1 MILLION throughout the year.  That’s pretty cool!  The MSPT has already awarded over $1.2 MILLION since launching in December 2009.

We look forward to seeing you all very soon!  The next MSPT $100K Guaranteed event will take place at Treasure Island Casino in Welch, MN, September 9-18, 2011.  This is an 18+ event.  Visit www.msptpoker.com for the event schedule.

Oh, and the new MSPT Facebook page was published a few minutes ago.  LIKE the MSPT Fan Page at:

WSOP 2011: Main Event Updates

3:25 PM Update:  Unfortunately the exciting run of Blake Bohn through the WSOP Main Event has come to an end.  It looked promising early when he doubled up right after play had started on Day 6.

Bohn got a table change and was moved into the BB, his 3rd BB in 10 hands to cut into his stack.  On the last hand he was under-the-gun with JJ and a 700K stack.  Bohn opened for 60K.  The button is a player knows personally, had just lost a pot and made it 160K.  Bohn thought he was steaming and was using their friendship against him so he shoved his JJ.  His opponent calls with KK, the flop was AAK and that was it.

Bohn placed 127 of 6,865 entrants for $54,851.  Congratulations to Blake for a well played Main Event!

Sun, 2:15 PM Update:  Kaboom!  Play just got underway here on Day 6 and Blake Bohn has already made his move!  Bohn doubles up with AK > 33 and is now up to 1.1 Million!!

1:45 AM Update:  The WSOP is that much funner to watch when you’ve got someone to root for.  Last year it was Jason Senti, this year its Blake Bohn.  Bohn got a sweet opportunity this evening to play on ESPN with one of his all-time favorite players, Allen Cunningham.

As mentioned earlier, ESPN didn’t show the nice pot Bohn took down.  Cunningham open-button-reraised and Bohn shoved QQ.  The other two hands Blake played at the featured table were Jd10d and AcJc.  He admits it took some time to get use to the lights and all but was happy to survive after being down to 300K at one point.

Sensational run for Bohn so far!  He’s one of the shorter stacks at 539K but still plenty of play.  He’s got a great shot at it.

12:50 AM Update:  Bohn ended Day 5 with 539K.  When play resumes Sunday the blinds will be 12K/24K, 3K ante.  142 players remain.  Unfortunately ESPN didn’t show the nice pot Bohn won while at the Featured Table during the tv broadcast.  Players will be back Sunday at 2:00 PM Central Time for Day 6!!  Fun to watch!

12:35 AM Update:  Bohn at 645K.  145 players left.  Here’s a photo of Bohn after his all in 4 bet preflop and no one calls.

12:15 AM Update: Its fun watching Blake at the Featured Table.  157 players remain, all players are guaranteed $54,851.  Bohn has about 477K.

11:15 PM Update:  Bohn has taken a little hit but still sits with 25BB, plenty to work with.  He’s at 494K.

10:55 PM Update:  BLAKE BOHN WILL BE AT THE ESPN FEATURE TABLE!  IT STARTS AIRING AT 11PM CENTRAL!!!

10:30 PM Update:  Players are back from dinner break and ready to roll.  ESPN will have 30-minute delayed coverage from 11pm -1:30am Central Time.  Quick recap:  Blake Bohn of Burnsville has 630K in chips. 173 players remain. Blinds will be 10K/20K with 3K ante when the players return. Avg. stack is 1.2M.  First place is $8.7 MILLION!!  All players are currently guaranteed 47K.

8:45 PM Update:  Players are on dinner break until 10:30 PM CST.  Bohn has 630K in chips.  173 players remain.  Blinds will be 10K/20K with 3K ante when the players return.  Avg. stack is 1.2M.

8:20 PM Update:  179 players remaining.  Bohn was temporarily over 1M in chips by taking a pot versus Lindgren but then lost 300K when his QQ < KQ.  10 minutes until dinner break.

8:00 PM Update:  183 players remaining, Avg stack about 1.1M.  Bohn has 900K.  Erick Lindgren has just been moved to Bohn’s right.  Lindgren has 600K.

6:30 PM Update:  Players are on their 2nd break of the day.  Bohn has 820K, average stack is 827K.  There are 222 players remaining, all players guaranteed $47,107.

5:15 PM Update:  With about 260 players left, Bohn has 880K in chips.  All players are guaranteed $40,654.

4:00 PM Update:  After 38 hours of total play, Bohn has 840K in chips.  297 players left.  All players are guaranteed $35,492.  Bohn just 4-bet pre-flop for the first time all tourney against Kevin Saul.  Saul is known for his online nickname “BeL0WaB0Ve” on sites such as PokerStars, Bodog and UltimateBet.  Saul became better known outside the online poker community in 2007 when he won the World Poker Tour (WPT) Bellagio Cup III Championship after defeating Mike Matusow during heads-up play, earning him the first place prize of $1,342,320.

“My heart was racing a bit,” Bohn said.  “He just tweeted about it on break.  Not sure what he had, my read was he was weak.  I only had JJ.”

Sat, July 16 Update:  There are 378 players remaining of the 6,865 that started and Blake Bohn of Burnsville is the last Minnesotan standing.  Bohn had a great day on Day 4, he began the day with 306,500 in chips and ended the day at 758K.  That currently places Bohn 81 of 378, so sitting well.  When the players return later today the blinds will be 5K/10K, 1K ante.  The average stack is 544K.  All players are guaranteed $30,974 at this point.

Tracy Blackwell who made it until Day 4 – placing 533rd – earned $23,876 for his great run.

1:00 AM Update: play is done for the evening, Bohn has 758K, avg stack is 541K. 380 players still remain. Tracy Blackwell is out 533rd when his AK ran into AA, all-in pre-flop. Sensational run by Blackwell!

11:00 PM Update: There are approximately 450 players remaining, Bohn has 600K

7:30 PM Update: Dinner break, Bohn at 527K

7:00 PM Update: Bohn now at 520K

6:30 PM Update: Blake Bohn has officially cashed. He has also increased his stack to 380K. No word yet on Blackwell’s status. Congrats to Blake! Hopefully Tracy is still rollin too.

Fri, July 15, 8:30 AM Update:  Minnesota has two representatives advancing to Day 4!  Blake Bohn of Burnsville and Tracy Blackwell of Monticello.  There are 852 players remaining, 693 get paid, a min-cash is $19,359.

Bohn is no stranger to being in this position.  He cashed in last year’s WSOP $10K Main Event as well, placing 722 for $19,263.  Bohn also finished 5th in the Chicago Poker Classic in March for $47K so there’s no doubt he’s on top of his game and determined to improve on his 2010 WSOP cash.

Bohn and Blackwell are both in good shape heading in to Day 4 which will resume later today.  Bohn grinded a short-stack for a couple of days before catching fire, he now sits at 306,500.  That puts Bohn at 228 of 852 players.  Blackwell has been study and has maintained a solid stack all week, he currently sits at 192K in chips, placing him 444 of 852.  Play will start up again at Level 15 with blinds at 2,000/4,000 & 500 ante.  Good luck boys!!

Fri, July 15, 1:22 AM Update:  Day 3 has ended.  Congrats to Tracy Blackwell for advancing to Day 4!  Blackwell has 192K in chips.  Matt Hyland busted with 3 hands left in Day 3 at about 12:30 AM, a great run!  No word yet on the status of Blake Bohn.  There are less than 100 players to go until the money which is place 693.  Check back in the morning for a status update.

10:00 PM Update:  Paul Dominski and Jason Seitz are out, fantastic runs by both!  Hyland at about 160K.  No current updates on Bohn or Blackwell.  About 1,100 players left, 693 is the money.

9:30 PM Update:  We’ve confirmed that Tracy Blackwell is going strong, he has 207K in chips.  The players are just coming back from dinner break, the plan is to play roughly 3 more hours this evening.  Minnesota has these 5 players left:  Hyland-227K, Blackwell-207K, Bohn-117K, Dominski-60K, Seitz-53K

8:30 PM Update:  Paul Dominski is still grindin as well, 60K.  So we’ve confirmed that Dominski – 60K, Hyland – 227K, Seitz – 53K and Bohn – 117K are still goin.  Hammers & Kronick out.  No word on Blackwell’s status.

8:10 PM Update:  Not clear when but Tom Hammers busted.  Great run by Hammers.

7:30 PM Update:  Players are on a 2-hour dinner break, then they will come back for about 3 more hours of play.  Jason Seitz has 53K.  Matt Hyland at 227K.  Blake Bohn at about 117K.  The blinds will be 1,500/3,000 400 ante when the players return for Level 14.

7:25 PM Update: Hyland at 227K.  Blake Bohn also doing well well at 117K, short stack at his table but surviving deep on Day 3.  David Kronick confirmed busted.

7:15 PM Update:  Hyland at 206K, Seitz still in.

6:50 PM Update:  Hyland at 226K, Seitz at 64K

6:40 PM Update: Hyland drops to 246K.

6:00 PM Update:  Hyland is butter…cause he’s on a roll…up over 400K.

5:40 PM Update:  Seitz up to 69K, Hyland at 270K

5:30 PM Update:  Seitz took a hit down to 13K but has rebounded back to 56K.  Hyland cruising so far today, now up to 290K.

4:30PM Update: Matt Hyland has increased his stack from 67K to 186K during the first level of Day 3.  Jason Seitz has remained steady at 75K.

Thurs, July 14 Update: Good luck today to the remaining Minnesota players participating in Day 3.

Wed, July 13 Update: 37 Minnesota players advanced to Day 2 but only 7 of those came out alive entering Day 3.  Day 3 will resume on Thursday.

1,866 players remain of the 6,865 who entered.  693 places get paid.  This year’s World Poker Champion set to collect $8,771,956.  Bracelet winner Ben Lamb of Tulsa, OK leads the way with 551,600 chips.

The top Minnesotan entering Day 3 is Minnetonka’s Paul Dominski who sits with 148,200 chips.  That currently places him 467th overall.

Day 3 will begin at Level 11, 800/1600 ante 200.  Here is a list of the 7 Minnesota players remaining.  Not listed, Brandon ‘oncommand’ Myers who is from Minnesota but currently resides in Ohio has 130K.

Sat, July 2 Update:  Michael Kovar of Eden Prairie scored a nice cash in Event #51 – $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better.  Its rare to see a Minnesotan cash in any event that’s not NLHE or LHE but Kovar placed 48 of 946 entrants for $4,955.

We’ve also gotten our 2nd WSOP Final Table participant!  Aalok Arora of Arden Hills scored an 8th place finish in Event #52 – $2,500 Mixed Hold’em (Limit/No-Limit).  Arora earned $31,047.

Fri, July 1 Update:  As we’ve been a bit preoccupied with the local story regarding Canterbury and Running Aces, the WSOP still goes on.  Jason Seitz of Forest Lake has been on a tear this year, currently leading the MNPokerMag Player of the Year race.  His biggest feat was a $56K win at the MSPT – Running Aces.  His hot streak and great play continues.  Seitz placed 35th of 2,714 entrants in Event #48 – $1,500 NLHE.  Seitz will deposit $15,089 for his terrific run.

Day 6 WSOP – ESPN Coverage

Like me, most of you are probably addicted to watching the poker coverage on ESPN and today they take it away from us slightly.  Its still available to watch but we have to work harder.  Yesterday’s Day 5 action was on ESPN2 with Hellmuth (who rocks on-air), today the coverage will be on ESPN3 which is internet-based.

As you may have noticed to the annoyance of those wanting to watch Blake Bohn’s run (we missed him win a nice pot at the feature table), in addition to the half hour delay they also switch coverage of featured tables every 30 minutes.  They are trying to protect the integrity of the game a bit so players can’t see every single hand another player plays.

Anyways, here’s the coverage schedule for Day 6 (eastern times listed):

Sunday, July 17 3 p.m.-8 p.m. WSOP Day 6 ESPN3.com
Sunday, July 17 10 p.m.-2:30 a.m. WSOP Day 6 ESPN3.com
Monday, July 18 1:00 a.m.-4:30 a.m. WSOP Day 6 ESPN2 (On tape delay)

Friday, July 15:  Blake Bohn’s WSOP Day 4 Scouting Report

With today’s technology and easier access to information, the game has changed a ton on how the players operate through a deep stacked, multi-day poker tournament.  Its extremely fascinating to hear how some of the serious players approach it.  With ESPN now broadcasting LIVE with a half hour delay, many of the players will know what their opponent had 30 minutes later.  Players tweet constantly about what they had or what their thought process was.

There is nobody more prepared than Blake Bohn to take advantage of all this information.  Bohn has been gracious enough to let MNPokerMag inside his head a bit as he journeys toward his 2nd consecutive Main Event cash.  Bohn sits in the top 25% of the field heading in to Day 4 with over 300K in chips.  He understands the grind, he’s been there before, he knows what it takes to be successful.

“Poker is a game of information,” Bohn said.  “People that don’t know exactly what we do as poker players think its just go to Vegas and party and gamble.  Its a pure grind and serious business.”

With the help of friend and fellow poker player Ryan Wold, Bohn does his homework on the players he’ll be sitting with each day.  They put together a scouting report and monitor the tweets throughout the day of his tablemates.

“We are watching for tweets and possible fake tweets,” Bohn stated.  “No one will be more prepared than me ever.”

Its clear Bohn is on a mission.  He’s had several deep runs and large cashes in the past, but like most poker players, this is the one he lives for.  He came so close to going the distance last year and is determined to surpass that this year.

As we all know, there is a percentage of the game that is luck and you can’t do anything about that.  But there is a large percentage of the game that is skill and preparation and Bohn won’t be outdone in that department.

Here is Bohn’s Scouting Report of his table for Friday, July 15, Day 4:

seat 1: Marc Backenecker Wunstorf, GA, DE 229,500

Could find very little about this guy.  Only live poker search
results were for this year’s main event.

seat 2: Justin Lepone GLEN ROCK, NJ, US 32,000

Higher up in an investment management firm.  Very little / no poker
results.  Played main event in 2010 but did not cash.

Payout Scales / Mini-Bubbles

I’m having a blast getting the opportunity to follow Blake on his WSOP journey.  I’ve learned a ton already in just the last couple of days on how to approach big time, deep, multi-day tourneys.  One always thinks they know poker but there’s a lot of things involved other than just playing your cards in these types of tournaments.  With the mass amounts of money on the line its important to be prepared for everything.  I’ve been sharing with you how Blake does his homework on his Scouting Reports and tracking Tweets but here is another fantastic concept.

As I mentioned previously, Bohn has a great back room support guy – Ryan Wold – who does a lot of research and work while Blake is playing.  Here Ryan and Blake talk through Payout Scales and Mini-Bubbles so depending on certain situations and variables, Bohn can maximize his earnings.

Here is a piece of a conversation from Wold to Bohn:

Here is the payout scale leading up to the final table.  I didn’t
include the final table because the payouts increase so quickly it
screws up the scaling and dwarfs all the lower payout increases.

I list the number of players where the bubble occurs, and the
%-increase in payout after that bubble passes.

so for example, “19 plyrs, +25%”, means when there are 19 guys left
and someone gets eliminated, your guaranteed payday goes up 25% (18th
pays 25% more than 19th place).

p.s. here it is in text form:
